Recovering Hope: Using the 12 Steps to Find Healing When You’ve Lost a Loved One to Addiction

For those who have lost a loved one to the disease of alcoholism or addiction, the thought that there ever may be healing feels difficult to grasp.  It is difficult to know where to turn to for help. This monthly meeting will offer support through the use of the tools found in 12 Step recovery. Each month will offer a different topic. The meetings will be held the SECOND WEDNESDAY of each month - from 7:00-8:30 PM.

Working with Clients with Substance Use Disorder, Cognitive Disabilities and PTSD: The Experts Show You How (FREE 2 HOUR CEU CREDITS)

Join Karen Eckstrom and Tom Beckers for two, one-hour presentations focused on how to work with populations that suffer from cognitive deficits, post-traumatic stress disorder and substance use disorders. Through anecdotes, best practices and experiential activities, the participant will establish a base knowledge of how to engage and work with adults in order to increase skillful behavior around managing their co-occurring disorders. This training is intended for providers and professionals serving those with mental health and substance use disorder

Why is it so difficult to get a loved one to stop abusing drugs and alcohol? What can a family member do in response to this serious problem? This workshop is offered for family members and others who are concerned about a loved one s substance use and want answers to these questions.

Workshop participants will:

  • Learn new ways of interacting with a friend or loved one regarding their use of substances
  • Learn what to avoid when talking with a loved one who abuses drugs or alcohol
  • Connect with helpful resources

Substance Use And Mental Health Challenges For Military - Connected Individuals & Families

A Certificate of Attendance will be provided for CEUs through the Minnesota Board of Social Work

This training is intended for those living with mental health issues, providers, family members, and community members.The presentation is by Kirsten Johnson, MPH & Captain Troy Davidson who has been with the Army National Guard Substance Abuse Prevention team for over 4 years. She is always looking for avenues to educate others on military culture and substance use specific to our population.

After attending the training, participants will:

  • Gain a better understanding of the unique challenges face d by military connected members of the community seeking care for substance use disorders (SUDs) such as stigma within the ranks, cultural humility in the provision of treatment, and the limits of insurance coverage (TRICARE);
  • Acquire knowledge about the specific challenges faced by organizations, agencies, and civilian treatment providers servicing these populations, and how to improve outreach and the quality of care provided to these members of the community;
  • Understand the impact of mental health challenges and substance use disorders on military - connected members of the community, the effects of deployment on both service - members and their families, as well as the evolving nature of military service in a post 9/11 world.
