Parenting the Addicted Teen and Young Adult: 5 strategies to help parents detach emotionally without abandoning their kids

We are excited to host Barbara Krovitz-Neren, MA, a pioneer in the addiction prevention field, founding board member of the National Association of Children of Alcoholics, author, researcher, and celebrated youth and parenting advocate!

Krovitz-Neren's innovative step-by-step program teach parents, and the professionals serving them, how to reconnect the entire family in the wake of addiction. The program is designed to help parents let go of the addicted family system and begin parenting with renewed strength and positive power.

Pre-registration is required as space is limited. There is no fee to attend the workshop.

Chemical Dependency, A Family Affair: a journey from addiction and shame to recovery and belonging

(Registration - 8:30-9:00 am | Workshop - 9:00 am-4:00 pm I Lunch on own 12:00-1:00 pm)

We are excited to host René Sternau , LP, LMFT, educator, trainer, and innovator in the addiction and recovery field, who has been clinically involved with the recovery community for almost 40 years! This powerful workshop will begin with looking at the correlation between addiction and shame, and how that dynamic impacts the way that families behave.  As the question becomes “How do we make this dysfunctional situation healthy?” we will then explore how healthy systems work, and how we can support families to create the changes needed for healing.

Fee: $50 per person ($25 for students)

Registration: Pre-registration required as space is limited

Participants can expect to:

  • Review and discuss the characteristics and circumstances that induce shame in childhood and adolescence.
  • Identify the eight properties of harmful dependency.
  • Examine and recognize the elements of a healthy family as a structure to heal shame.

Help! How Do I Make Them Stop?

Why is it so difficult to get a loved one to stop abusing drugs and alcohol? What can a family member do in response to this serious problem? This workshop is offered for family members and others who are concerned about a loved one  s substance use and want answers to these questions.

Workshop participants will:

  • Learn new ways of interacting with a friend or loved one regarding their use of substances
  • Learn what to avoid when talking with a loved one who abuses drugs or alcohol
  • Connect with helpful resources

The event will be held at the Diamondhead Education Center  (see below for address and details) from 6:30-8:00 PM, on Wednesday, October 24th.
